Introducing... ME!
Hi all, my name is Lynn, I am 51, 5 months post op - Lap gastric bypass roux-en-Y. I have lost 72 pounds, I feel really great! I am going through the not so great thinning of the hair... I HATE it! My hair is long and the thinning is troublesome to me. I know I need to exercise more, it's one of my goals. You can see my blog here: My Journey

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
|
 |
A type of gastric bypass procedure which combines restrictive and malabsorption techniques - meaning, it reduces the amount of food a patient can comfortably eat (restriction), and also reduces the amount of calories that can be digested in the small intestine (malabsorption). This combination of bariatric methods leads to greater weight loss and the roux-en-y procedure is seen as one of the best ways to treat clinically severe obesity.

Re: Introducing... ME!
Hi Lynn and Maryann,
The hairloss is a scary thing, but I think it is part of the body's reaction to the stress that surgery and a big change in diet and lifestyle can bring.
Make sure you keep up the protein. I knew that this was what seemed to help other WLS people who were facing this problem. I made sure to always eat a good amount of protein each day and I had very little hairloss. It may sound extreme to some but I ate between 60-90 grams of protein daily. I used shakes to supplement what I couldn't eat since I have a Lap Band.
I hope this helps

Protein
|
 |
One of the three nutrients that provides calories to the body. Protein is an essential nutrient that helps build many parts of the body, including muscle, bone, skin, and blood. Protein provides 4 calories per gram and is found in foods like meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, beans, nuts, and tofu.
Proteins are an essential human nutrient, obtained from both plant and animal foods. Though their greatest commercial use is in food products, they are also employed in adhesives, plastics, and fibres. |

Congrats on the 72 pound loss thus far - you're doing great. Fortunately I didn't have any hairloss. Could be that Black folks hair when au'naturel is just too stubborn to thin? LOL --- I did see an interesting video the other day - I just posted it and an accompanying article at Hair Loss After Gastric Bypass - Stimulate Regrowth With Scalp Massage
AGain = welcome to The Journey and enjoy your stay.

Excellent advice Lynn! I was told too that keeping your protein between 60 - 75 grams is recommended daily for not only the hair loss but for strong bones as well. I was told that that's the amount of protein I should strive for daily. I do try - sometimes I fall a bit short - but I've gotten better now that I'm 6months out.
Also - I read somewhere that there are vitamins that can help with strong hair regrowth as well - Perhaps you ladies should check out the site from our friends at Gastric Bypass Truth.
